Hi, I’m Aja. My love for Afro hair started long before I opened my salon or studied Public Relations and Communications at Solent University. My sister and I grew up watching my mum, the queen of braiding turn hair into pure art. In our family, aunties, cousins… everyone had magic in their hands. From early on, I learned our hair isn’t just hair. It’s culture, beauty and personality.

In 2018, I opened Beauty by Aja Ndeye, and for almost 10 years I’ve been caring for our community’s curls, coils, locs and braids. Along the way, I’ve had the privilege of working with local councils, schools, care homes and universities, helping people understand Afro-Caribbean hair and why it deserves proper care and respect.

I’ve always had a soft spot for children and working with children of all ages from first time salon visits to teenagers trying to navigate their way through life is truly one of the most fulfilling parts of what I do. There’s something beautiful about watching a child relax, laugh, and feel completely themselves while I care for their hair. I love entertaining them, teaching them, and turning each appointment into a safe, joyful moment where they feel seen and celebrated. My salon is a place where no child is judged — only loved, appreciated, and reminded that their hair is something to be proud of. Helping them understand their curls, coils and culture while building their confidence is truly one of the greatest gifts of this work.

I created this book so that children can understand the history woven into their hairstyles, learn where they come from, and see themselves represented with pride. I want every child to feel confident in the beauty of their roots and the culture their hair carries. My hope is that as they turn each page, they feel celebrated, empowered and deeply loved — because our hair holds stories, and every child deserves to know just how powerful theirs is.
